Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is treatment that helps you move better, improve or restore your physical function, fitness level and may relieve pain.

You may need physical therapy if you have health problems that make it hard to move around and do everyday tasks. Our goal in your physical therapy is to make daily tasks and activities easier for you. We want to help you improve your walking, going up stairs or getting in and out of bed.

Conditions we treat

Physical therapy can be used alone or along with other treatments to help you move more easily after an injury, surgery or chronic condition. With physical therapy, we can treat:

  • Arthritis
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Back pain
  • Bursitis
  • Chronic pain
  • COPD
  • Dehydration
  • Lymphedema
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Muscle fatigue
  • Neurologic disorders
  • Orthopedic disorders
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Pediatric injuries
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Post-surgical cases
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Sports rehabilitation
  • Tendonitis
  • Trauma brain injury / concussion
  • Vestibular disorders

Treatments and procedures

At your first session, a physical therapist will discuss your symptoms, daily activity and treatment plan. The personalized treatments are designed to improve strength, range of motion, flexibility and endurance, coordination and/or balance.

Our therapists begin by trying to reduce pain and swelling using techniques such as manual therapy, heat, cold, water or ultrasound. Exercise is usually included in physical therapy and can include stretching, core exercises, weightlifting or walking. You might also learn exercises to do on your own at home.

Several locations for outpatient physical therapy

We have several locations near your home or work to get you back to enjoying life. At Genesis Outpatient Rehabilitation, physical therapy focuses on the neck, shoulders, upper and lower back, hips, knees and ankles. Physical therapists help with gait (walking) training, balance exercises and activities specific to your work or sports.

You’ll also find physical therapy at Genesis HealthCenter New Concord, the Genesis Perry County Medical Center in Somerset and the Genesis Orthopedic Center in Zanesville.

Inpatient therapy for patients at Genesis Hospital

If you are hospitalized as an inpatient at Genesis, you may have a physical therapy consult placed by a provider to check your strength and mobility status. After the evaluation is completed, you may be added to the physical therapy caseload and receive ongoing interventions to assist with improving your strength, mobility and independence. The Inpatient Physical Therapy team members collaborate with you, your provider, nursing and case management to assist with safe discharge recommendations for each patient once medical status is stable.

Occupational Rehabilitation

After an employee encounters a work-related injury, you’re eager to help them recover, feel well and return to work. The occupational rehabilitation service at Genesis Occupational Health can help. Our rehab programs assess the employees’ abilities to get back on the job, and a plan is developed to return to work.

For patients, family members and caregivers living with a recent or existing traumatic brain injury, we offer our brain injury support group to share your experiences, challenges and receive support.

After an injury, employees can receive high-quality, cost-effective treatment for a prompt return to work and a healthy life. We have a wide array of occupational rehab therapies for neck, back and orthopedic injuries to get employees back to work. Referrals can also be made to specialists when needed.

    • Back pain, back strains
    • Bursitis
    • Chronic pain
    • Minor fractures
    • Muscle injuries
    • Neck injuries, neck strains
    • Orthopedic injuries
    • Post-surgical cases
    • Spinal cord injury
    • Sprains and strains
    • Tendonitis

Our therapists have special training in occupational rehabilitation and use programs especially designed to meet the employer’s and employee’s needs and goals. The treatments include general warmups, aerobics, circuit training (carry, lift, push/pull), sit/stand tolerance and education. Occupational rehabilitation completion can include up to 4 to 8 hours of therapy and simulating the job the employee will return to after therapy.

How our occupational rehab programs work

The employee will work with therapists in daily sessions at a Genesis Rehabilitation Services location to improve physical strength, aerobic fitness and work capacity for a more successful return to the workplace. A team of physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners and technicians is here to help, and employers are kept up to date about the employee’s injuries and recovery.

    Work hardening

Work hardening is a program that focuses on work-related activities designed to prepare employees to get back on the job. The patient plays an active role in their rehabilitation by simulating their everyday work activities and receives an assessment to determine if they can return to work. Work hardening treatments start with 2 hours daily and progress to 4 to 8 hours a day by the end of the treatment.

    Physical reconditioning

Physical reconditioning is designed to increase physical tolerance, psychological status and performance of duties. While physical conditioning is less intense than work hardening, the end goal is that a patient will be more employable by the end of the reconditioning. Treatment is typically three times a week for 2 hours each and patients receive an assessment to determine if they can return to work.

    Functional capacity evaluation

Functional capacity evaluation looks at the individual’s musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, daily living activities, pain, body mechanics, sit/stand/drive tolerances, bending, reaching, squatting, climbing, lifting, carrying and push/pull activities. This type of evaluation assesses a patient's work abilities and their maximum ability to perform certain tasks.

    Work capacity evaluation

Work capacity evaluation may include the same tests as the functional capacity evaluation, in addition to an evaluation of the patient's ability to complete specific work tasks related to his or her job specific demands.

If you’re experiencing pain, functional dry needling might be an effective supplemental technique along with your physical therapy. Functional dry needling treats musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions and works quickly to decrease pain and improve functional mobility. It is not appropriate for all conditions or pathologies. Your physical therapist will help you determine if dry needling is an effective treatment for you. Functional dry needling is not acupuncture (traditional Chinese medicine). It is based on neuroanatomy and modern scientific study of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems.

A very fine filament needle is inserted through the skin and into the deeper tissues that are considered trigger points to your pain. The sterile, single-use needles create a microlesion within the pathological tissue, breaking up shortened tissues, inhibiting a reflex arc from the nervous system to the tissue and inducing a mild inflammatory response and centrally mediating the pain. This mechanical and neuromuscular effect enhances the body’s ability to heal, which ultimately reduces pain.

The conditions treated can include neck, back and shoulder pain, arm pain (tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, golfer’s elbow), headache to include migraines and tension-type headaches, jaw pain, buttock pain and leg pain (sciatica, hamstrings strains, calf tightness/spasms) and others. The treatment is administered by a specialized physical therapist. For more information, call Genesis Rehabilitation Services at 740-455-5151.

If you have symptoms of lymphedema, our specialty-trained lymphedema therapists can provide an evaluation and develop a comprehensive plan to meet your needs. Lymphedema is swelling caused by an abnormal buildup of fluids in the tissue due to the lymph system not working correctly. In lymphedema rehab you can learn the signs and symptoms of lymphedema, risk-reduction practices and prevention, drainage techniques and training and exercises.

You can also receive recommendations for measuring and fitting compression garments including knee high compression stockings, thigh high compression stockings, compression arm sleeves, compression gloves and gauntlets, compression alternatives including Velcro wraps, compression bandaging or a pneumatic compression pump. Using the technology, biomechanical areas of deficit are examined that may cause pain or increase your risk for pain. Your running analysis is performed on a treadmill to produce 2D images of your mechanics. After analysis, a treatment plan is formulated for you to improve efficiency, endurance and reduce pain. The program does not need a physician referral and is available for self-pay. For more information, call Genesis Rehabilitation Services at 740-455-5151.

The unique exercise program for female athletes is designed by Cincinnati SportsMedicine and Orthopedic Center to help reduce risk of injury and enhance overall performance. The program focuses on developing lower extremity strength and perfecting jumping and landing mechanics. This elite program is offered by certified physical therapists at Genesis.

The training program is 6 weeks and encompasses dynamic warm-up, plyometrics/jump training, speed and agility training, high intensity strength training and flexibility training. Sportsmetrics™ can help determine your risk for injury. The Sports Injury Test included in the program evaluates strength, function, flexibility and body mechanics. After completing testing, the Genesis Sportsmetrics™ certified trainers help you correct the deficiencies found through testing. While this program was scientifically tested on females, males can also benefit from developing overall lower extremity strength and perfecting jumping and landing mechanics. For more information, call Genesis Rehabilitation Services at 740-455-5151.

Stroke rehabilitation at Genesis focuses on each individual’s needs and encompasses an outpatient team including physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and counseling, all available at Genesis Rehabilitation Services.

Physical therapy focuses on sitting, standing and walking with state-of-the-art equipment, including a LiteGait machine. The machine helps provide support to encourage walking earlier in the therapy. Experienced therapists work side-by-side patients and their families to improve the patient’s ability to move. The therapy includes navigating steps, stairs and curbs.

Occupational therapy helps patients return to daily activities such as dressing, bathing, reading and cooking. The occupational therapists also complete vision screenings and treatment for eye movement disorders after a stroke.

Our special stroke therapy includes speech therapy to help improve speech, memory, eating and swallowing. Our specialty-trained speech-language pathologists use VitalStim® to help with swallowing. A doctor’s referral is needed to schedule an evaluation. For more information, call Genesis Rehabilitation Services at 740-455-5151.

Specialized vestibular therapy is available at Genesis. Vestibular therapists perform visual screenings, positioning tests, coordination tests and balance and gait (walking) analysis to diagnose your condition. Our therapists also work closely with physicians, neurologists, ear, nose and throat specialists (ENTs) and audiologists to develop the best rehabilitation and treatment plan for you. For more information, call Genesis Rehabilitation Services at 740-455-5151.

You’ll find a special therapy available at Genesis to improve swallowing. VitalStim® is a safe and effective non-invasive treatment for patients suffering with difficulty swallowing, or dysphagia. Performed by a trained-speech language pathologist, the therapy uses neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), to help strengthen muscles and improve swallowing. For more information, call Genesis Rehabilitation Services at 740-455-5151.

Our qualified physical therapists can help find the best type of equipment to increase your mobility. First, a physician or other healthcare provider recommends a manual/power wheelchair or scooter to increase your mobility. Then our physical therapist evaluates your balance, walk or gait and limitations. The evaluation takes about one hour, and a skilled physical therapist and wheelchair vendor is present. At the end of the session, you’ll have the opportunity to try out equipment. You can also receive training with the recommended equipment, if needed. For more information, call Genesis Rehabilitation Services at 740-455-5151.

We offer a wide range of physical therapy and other rehabilitation programs specifically designed for women’s needs including breast cancer rehabilitation and Sportsmetrics™, a training program for female athletes. For more information, call Genesis Rehabilitation Services at 740-455-5151.

You’ll find work hardening, an individualized program of work-related activities, available at convenient locations. The treatment uses body mechanics to improve musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and biochemical psychomotor systems to return to work. The treatment starts with two to four hours daily and progresses to eight hours a day by the time the treatment is complete. The program simulates work tasks/duties with licensed therapists who assess the safety and accuracy of completing work tasks/duties.

Another program, work conditioning, does just what it says. It conditions you to get back to work as soon as you can. The goal is to increase tolerance, evaluate psychological status and improve your job-related activities. The treatment is usually two hours for each treatment, three times a week. For more information, call Genesis Rehabilitation Services at 740-455-5151.

          Concussion Management and Therapy

Genesis Rehabilitation Services are experienced and specialty-trained in treating both children and adults with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) or concussions. Our licensed physical therapists will work with you and your physician to determine the severity of your concussion. After your evaluation, our specialists will develop a return to play or return to work treatment plan and use concussion testing technologies to set cognitive baselines and post-concussion benchmarks during your recovery.

For patients, family members and caregivers living with a recent or existing traumatic brain injury, we offer our brain injury support group to share your experiences, challenges and receive support.

          What Is a concussion?

A concussion is a type of brain injury that involves a short loss of brain function and can be a scary injury.  A concussion sometimes follows a blow to the head or a fall.

The injury can cause symptoms such as:

          • Blurred vision
          • Dizziness
          • Irritability, sadness or anxiety

          Responding to concussion symptoms

If you suspect a concussion in your child or yourself, stop athletic activity right away and seek medical attention to prevent further injury.

Genesis Rehabilitation Services staff measures the severity of potential concussions by using a standardized test. Depending on the results, a physical therapist will develop a personalized rehabilitation plan and monitor your or your child’s progress throughout recovery.

Return to play program after a concussion

Our return to play program is supervised and administered by licensed physical therapists specialty-trained in concussions.

If your child or loved one receives or is suspecting of receiving a concussion, has a suspected concussion, they can be evaluated by one of our specialty-trained therapists. After the evaluation, a physical therapist will develop a personalized rehabilitation plan and monitor the patient's progress throughout recovery.

The program has five phases, with at least 24 hours between each phase. If concussion symptoms reoccur, the athlete or individual stops activity and rests, then the therapy resumes when the athlete is symptom-free.

Our therapists work closely with your physician to ensure it’s safe to return to sports, school or work.

Make an appointment for a concussion evaluation, testing

You will need a physician referral for your first concussion therapy session. Concussion therapies are available at the Genesis Outpatient Rehabilitation. Concussion evaluation and therapy is also available at the Genesis Coshocton Medical Center and the Genesis Perry County Medical Center in Somerset.
