    Electrophysiology

Patients experiencing palpitations, fluttering or racing heartbeats may benefit from Genesis Electrophysiology services. Arrhythmias can sometimes occur in a healthy heart and be of minimal consequence, but they can sometimes indicate a serious problem that can lead to heart disease, stroke or sudden death. Cardiac electrophysiology is the diagnosis and treatment of those abnormal heart rate and rhythms.

      Structural Heart

Led by fellowship-trained physicians recognized in their field of expertise, the structural heart program at Genesis has assembled a team of physicians that provide the best possible heart care for patients throughout Southeastern Ohio. Our team has years of training and experience with leading-edge procedures and advanced technologies, including teaching more than 45 new structural heart programs throughout the country.

      Top 50 heart hospital

Genesis is one of America’s Top 50 Heart Hospitals

      Conditions we treat

Structural heart disease may be present at birth, or it can develop later in life. We use life-changing treatments to repair damaged heart valves, walls, muscle or tissue. Addressing structural heart issues can reduce symptoms such as weakness and shortness of breath, which not only can improve your quality of life, but also help prolong it.

We treat a variety of conditions for patients including:

      • Aortic stenosis - Is the stiffening or narrowing of the aortic valve. Calcium build up is the most common cause. Aortic stenosis usually affects elderly patients with other medical risk factors which makes them better candidates for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).

      • Heart valve disease

      • Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) - Occurs when patients are diagnosed with an opening, or hole, in the heart that did not close after birth. This birth defect can cause problems later in life, including stroke, and affect the control of blood flow between heart chambers.

      Treatments and procedures

Genesis is the only hospital in the region performing innovative and minimally-invasive procedures for cardiac care. These new technologies and techniques allow our highly-skilled physicians to care for your heart while reducing downtime, scarring and pain after a procedure:

      • Impella® heart pump - The Impella® Percutaneous Hemodynamic Support Device is used in patients with heart failure and high-risk patients undergoing Percutaneous Intervention (PCI) stenting. Impella pumps blood from the left ventricle of the heart during a procedure to allow it to recover and rest.

      • Lead extractions

      • MitraClip™ - Is a minimally invasive procedure that can reduce the risk of heart failure and stroke for patients with mitral valve regurgitation. Our physicians use a tube to insert the MitraClip implant through a vein in your upper leg and guide it to your heart, where it is attached to your mitral valve to help it close properly and restore normal blood flow.

      • Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) closure - The procedure to close a hole in the heart, not detected at birth, takes a much different route than in the past when open-heart surgery was required to correct the opening. Our physicians use a catheter to enter blood vessels to reach the heart. Once there, the catheter guides a device called an occluder to the opening, allowing it to expand and close the hole.

      • Robotic-assisted cardiac heart surgery - These minimally-invasive heart procedures being performed at Genesis include Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) and cardiac tissue ablation. During a robotic-assisted CABG, the physician is able to make smaller incisions that expose only damaged arteries rather than the entire heart like traditional open-heart surgery.

      • Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR)

      • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) - Uses advanced imaging and small catheters to replace diseased heart valves. Instead of a large incision to the chest, physicians performing TAVR use a flexible tube to guide a new valve through a blood vessel to the heart. TAVR is minimally invasive, meaning patients have less pain and experience faster recovery times – usually needing just an overnight stay in the hospital.

      • Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (MVR)

      • WATCHMAN™ - This implant can reduce the risk of stroke and eliminate blood thinners for patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) not caused by a heart valve problem. During a one-time, minimally invasive procedure, WATCHMAN is inserted through a small tube from a blood vessel in the leg to the heart where it closes the left atrial appendage. Patients typically return home the next day and may be able to stop blood thinners within 45 days.

For the 2nd year in a row

The Genesis Heart and Vascular Rehab Program (Phase II) is a safe way to bounce back after a heart attack, open-heart surgery or balloon angioplasty, and reduce heart disease risk factors.

We also have a variety of healthy lifestyle programs open to members of the community, patients and anyone interested in becoming more physically active.

        Ask for a Referral

Ask your doctor to refer you to heart and vascular rehabilitation, a program that starts with a two-hour orientation held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For more information, call 740-454-4336 or 800-322-4762, ext. 4336.

        Innovative options for cardiac rehab

A personalized exercise program is created for each patient. Patients exercise under the watchful eye of staff with ECG and blood pressure monitoring when they first enter the program.

As strength, endurance and range of motion improve, patients will continue to progress toward maintenance exercise. We offer internal exercise programs and external community facilities with exercise physiologists who continue to work with you and monitor your progress.

Research from the American College of Cardiology and Hospital to Home (H2H) suggests early admission to cardiac rehab helps reduce unnecessary hospital readmissions and improve transitions of care.

          See You In Seven (SY7)

The goal of SY7 is for all patients discharged with a heart attack or stent to start cardiac rehab within 7 days of discharge. When SY7 patients come into the program, they will be on a restricted exercise prescription for the first week to allow ample healing time, and then they will transition into normal progression.

          See You In Fourteen (SY14)

The goal of SY14 is for all patients discharged following open heart surgery to start cardiac rehab within 14 days of discharge. When SY14 patients come into the program, they will be on a restricted exercise prescription for the first two weeks to allow ample healing time, and then they will transition into normal progression.

Genesis Heart & Vascular Rehab’s goal is to make you healthier and help you develop lifelong exercise routines. That’s why if you are eligible, you can “graduate” to non-ECG monitored sessions with our clinical staff. Our graduated ECG monitoring program allows you to learn how your body reacts to exercise, teaches signs and symptoms to watch for and boosts your confidence to continue a lifelong exercise program.

Understanding heart disorders, the causes and the effects, is the focus of heart and vascular rehab education. Dietitians, pharmacists, exercise physiologists, behavioral health counselors and registered nurses help patients understand heart disease, its risk factors and what patients can do to change their risks.

Another goal of our heart and vascular rehab program is to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Group sessions are an opportunity to share your experiences, concerns, challenges and victories and gain support from others who know how you feel.

Heart and vascular rehab is partially covered by Medicare if you've had a heart attack, open-heart surgery, valve repair or replacement, stable angina, balloon angioplasty or heart transplant. Most commercial insurances cover cardiac rehab, but we strongly recommend you call your insurance company to determine your coverage and co-pay.

We also have experts who can help verify your insurance coverage and any co-pays prior to beginning the cardiac rehab program.

A physician referral is required for admission to the program.

Genesis Cardiac Rehab is now accepting Silver Sneakers members for cardiac rehab. Silver Sneakers is a free benefit for seniors with qualifying Medicare health plans. Members have unlimited access to the Genesis Cardiac Rehab gym. For hours and to learn more, call 740-454-4336.

              Continued cardiac care

Our comprehensive services include diagnostic testing; a rehabilitation gym; the Anticoagulation Clinic (for monitoring your blood when taking blood-thinning medications); the Vein Center; and the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic.

Our specialists are experienced in both Sudden Cardiac Arrest, when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, as well as Myocardial Infarction, which occurs when the blood flow to a certain part of the heart is blocked.

                12-lead EKG saves lives

Before you even arrive at our Emergency Department (ED) by ambulance, our ED doctors and cardiac team already have a plan to stop your heart attack. That’s because Genesis Hospital, Genesis Community Ambulance and the local EMS community have partnered to equip Emergency Medical Services (EMS) vehicles with 12-lead EKG monitors so they can determine if you are having a heart attack before arriving at the hospital. This lead time enables the hospital’s heart team to be ready to intervene as soon as you arrive. They can literally stop a heart attack in its tracks.

We can help you manage conditions that can lead to serious heart problems. These include high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure and Metabolic Syndrome, which is a group of health problems that include excess fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure and blood sugar, high triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol.

When your heart is unable to properly pump the blood your body needs, you are suffering from heart failure. Our specialists will help you manage and treat your condition with lifestyle changes, medicines and when necessary, pacemakers and defibrillators.

There are many types of arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) that range from minor to life-threatening. Our team of electrophysiologists will evaluate the severity of your irregular heartbeat and recommend appropriate treatments based on your individual need.

This narrowing or blockage of the arteries or veins in your legs, arms or torso is caused by plaque buildup. From evaluation and diagnosis through lifestyle changes and treatments, which may include drug therapy or a minimally invasive procedure, our general and interventional cardiologists will provide guidance to help you minimize the effects of these conditions.
