Education

We provide education to the community and our patients and your families, from prevention and diagnostics to treatment and survivorship. We reach out to the community at events and gatherings to educate you and your family on how to prevent cancer through screenings and lifestyle changes. We also discuss treatment options, side effects management and survivorship care.

Behavioral health

Your emotional and mental health plays a role in how you and your support team deal with cancer. We have behavioral health specialists available if you or your family need help coping with your diagnosis and treatment.

Financial assistance

Our Patient Financial Services staff can help determine benefits through your insurance, eligibility for insurance or financial assistance programs, medication assistance programs, transportation or housing assistance. If you or a loved one needs to stay overnight in Zanesville, you may qualify for a discounted rate at a local hotel.

Hospice care

Genesis Hospice has been providing care to the community for more than 30 years. We offer care wherever you call home, nursing facilities, Genesis Hospital and Genesis Morrison House. Our team includes board-certified physicians, nursing staff, home health aides, social workers, bereavement counselors, pastoral care staff and volunteers. We also offer music therapy, pet therapy, aroma therapy and Hospice clowns for visitation. We’re recognized as a Level 4 Hospice for our commitment to recognizing veterans through a pinning ceremony and our work with veterans in the community.

Nurse Navigators

If you are diagnosed with cancer, a cancer treatment program will be designed just for you. You will also be assigned a Nurse Navigator who meets with you throughout your treatment journey to guide you. Rely on your Navigator for help with:

Applying for financial aid and understanding insurance benefits
Communicating with the rest of your cancer team
Coordinating medical appointments
Discussing side effects of treatment or concerns
Taking advantage of support services and community resources
Understanding your condition and treatment options

Nutrition

Good nutrition is key to healing, feeling good throughout treatment and beyond. You may find you have a decreased appetite from symptoms of cancer or from side effects of treatment. Our nurses and dietitians can educate you on how to manage your dietary needs. Other side effects you may experience include having a sore mouth or trouble swallowing, or food may taste bland. Our staff can discuss medications or diet modifications to help ease the symptoms. Maintaining good fluid intake is important for energy, maintaining blood pressure and flushing medications through your system. Our staff will guide you on what you should drink or avoid during treatment.

Palliative care

Genesis provides palliative care to offer symptom control for patients and their families dealing with serious illnesses. Palliative means comfort in Latin, and that’s exactly the goal of palliative care – to give comfort for patients with a chronic or serious illness. Palliative Care staff help patients deal with the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness like cancer.

Pet therapy

Our pet volunteers will bring a smile to your face. These specially trained dogs offer a distraction and lend a paw in times of need. Therapy dogs seem to have a positive effect on those individuals who love animals. In many cases the patient’s focus is momentarily diverted from their emotional and physical challenges of cancer treatment by focusing on the dog.

Chase Research has shown that when a patient interacts with a dog, the patient may realize a reduction of blood pressure, stress, anxiety, loneliness, depression and fear. Responses may also include increased awareness, communication and smiles. Dog visits offer physical and emotional benefits and may help the healing process along with your wellbeing.

Spiritual care

Serious illness and cancer often brings up feelings of anxiety and questions. Our compassionate spiritual care team offers guidance and emotional support, even if you don’t have a religious affiliation. Our spiritual care team is here to listen, offer words of comfort and encouragement, hold your hand, or offer a hug. Services our team offers includes:

  • Being an advocate
  • Crisis intervention
  • Cultural diversity training
  • Notifying churches and synagogues for patients if requested
  • No One Dies Alone (NODA)
  • Religious sacraments

Support groups and classes

Support groups and classes offer you and your family encouragement and advice during your journey. We offer classes such as the Genesis Risk Intervention Program (GRIP) for exercise and strengthening after treatment.

Survivorship care plan

Depending on the type and stage of your cancer, you may receive a survivorship care plan. The care plan recommends ways to stay healthy and explains how often to schedule certain cancer screenings. You and your primary care doctor will also receive a treatment summary for your records.

Breast prostheses, bras and shapers

Our quality post-treatment accessories meet the special and unique needs of each individual patient. Our certified staff members will take the time to discuss your options for prosthesis, bras or shapers. We offer private dressing rooms for fittings. We will teach you how to adjust, clean and care for your prostheses, as well as when to replace your items. Insurance companies allow for new prosthesis, bras, and shapers at a set interval. We will check with your insurance on eligibility for new items.

Certified mastectomy fitters

A certified fitter will meet with you to answer all your questions during a private, closed-door appointment. Our mastectomy fitters have been specially trained to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. They earn certifications through the American Board for Certification of Orthotics and Prosthetics. They are educated and trained in fitting, adjusting or modifying your prostheses and accessories.

Wigs, scarves and head coverings

The Women’s Boutique offers a variety of wigs, scarves and head coverings to meet your individual needs. We offer private dressing rooms, vanities, large mirrors and styling products for your personalized fitting. Our compassionate staff will teach you how to wear, clean and care for your wigs and head coverings.

Breast Care Center

The Genesis Breast Care Center, located in the Genesis HealthPlex, offers convenient appointments with our dedicated breast surgeon and compassionate staff. You can also get your mammogram in the HealthPlex – right across from the Breast Care Center. We offer digital mammography technology with 3-D tomosynthesis. The center is recognized by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and a designated Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. Weekly breast cancer conferences are held with a team approach involving surgeons, oncologists, nurse navigators, radiologists and pathologists to coordinate your care. Our goal is to ensure you receive the highest quality of breast care.

Once breast cancer is detected or diagnosed, surgical treatment plans need to be made to remove the cancer and reduce the chance of the cancer returning. Our Breast Care Center offers patients a full range of surgical options.

Increase your odds of detecting breast cancer early – when it’s easier to treat – with regular breast exams and imaging tests according your doctor’s recommended schedule.

You can trust Genesis for high-quality, digital breast imaging because we’re accredited by the American College of Radiology as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE). That means we meet high standards for image quality, staff training, equipment and quality assurance and control.

Free mammograms

You may qualify for a free or reduced-fee digital mammogram from Genesis HealthCare System if you’re a woman:

Age 40 or older without insurance coverage for a mammogram
Younger than 40 and have a parent or sibling who’s experienced breast or ovarian cancer
Younger than 40 and have an area of concern in your breast
Whose income falls within 300 percent of the federal poverty guidelines

Testing

In most centers, you wait days for test results. We understand this can be very stressful, so at the Breast Care Center, we make sure your test results are timely.

We offer same-day testing and radiology results for our patients in the Breast Care Center who need:

  • Breast biopsy – pathology results take two to seven days
  • Genetic testing – results take two to three weeks
  • Mammogram
  • Ultrasonography

Therapy, chemotherapy and radiation

    Biotherapy

    Depending on the type of biotherapy used, you may receive this treatment at the Genesis Cancer Care Center in the chemotherapy and infusion suite or in your home. Biotherapy is a treatment that uses substances made from living organisms to treat diseases like cancer. These substances can occur naturally in the body, or they may be manufactured in a laboratory. Some biotherapies stimulate or suppress the immune system to help the body fight cancer. Other biotherapies attack cancer cells, which may help keep them from growing or even kill them. They may also help lessen some side effects caused by some cancer treatments.

    Chemotherapy

    Our unique chemotherapy pods are designed like private, first-class airline seating with heated massage capabilities to help ease the stress of treatment. iPads are available for use. The room features large floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Genesis Gorsuch Fitness Trail.

    Chemotherapy uses medications to kill cells that grow quickly, including cancer. This treatment also affects some healthy cells in your digestive tract, bone marrow and hair follicles, which can lead to side effects. Your Genesis care team will help you manage side effects while making sure you get the most benefit from chemotherapy.

    We offer the following methods to administer chemotherapy:

    • Central line catheters (short-term and long-term)
    • Infusion
    • Intramuscular injection
    • Intrathecal therapy
    • Oral medication
    • Peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line
    • Port
    • Subcutaneous injection

    Imaging

    Imaging procedures are used to diagnose cancer and evaluate if treatment is working, and to see if the cancer has spread or has been contained. Imaging suites are designed to make you comfortable while delivering up to 60 percent less radiation when compared to older imaging technology. The newer technology produces images within seconds.

    Our imaging procedures include:

    • Computed tomography (CT)
    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
    • Positron emission tomography (PET)

    Immunotherapy

    Depending on the type of immunotherapy used, you may receive this treatment at the Genesis Cancer Care Center in the chemotherapy and infusion suite or in your home. Immunotherapy is a type of biological therapy that helps your immune system fight cancer. The immune system helps your body fight infections and other diseases. It’s made up of white blood cells and organs and tissues of the lymph system.

     

    Infusion therapy

    The Cancer Care Center has a chemotherapy and infusion suite. The types of infusion therapy you may receive here include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biologic therapy, blood transfusion, platelet transfusions, iron infusions, IV fluids, electrolyte replacement and therapeutic phlebotomy.

    Pharmacy services

    Our on-site pharmacy offers expert oncology-trained pharmacists and the most-up-to-date cancer protocols. Our pharmacists provide education regarding your cancer treatment and side effect management.

    Radiation therapy

    Radiation therapy uses high-energy waves that you can’t feel to kill cancer cells. Your doctor will recommend the type of radiation treatment that’s right for you and your condition. Our two linear accelerators enable us to offer the latest radiation treatments with little or no wait time. These treatments include high-dose hypo-fractionated radiation, which compresses your treatments into just a few visits rather than several days in a row.

    External radiation therapy

    Using advanced external radiation therapy equipment, we can precisely target radiation to destroy tumors in your body. Additionally, we have technology to allow radiation beams to conform to the shape of the cancerous mass and minimize exposure to nearby healthy tissue. Your oncologist will discuss the different types of external radiation treatment types available at Genesis, which include:

    • Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
    • Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)
    • Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT)
    • Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)

    Internal radiation therapy

    If you have breast, cervical, liver or prostate cancer, you may be a candidate for internal radiation therapies. Some of these therapies involve the placement of radioactive seeds into or near your tumor to minimize radiation exposure to healthy tissue and reduce treatment time. Other radiation techniques involve hormone treatments that starve tumors of the hormones they need to grow. Your team of medical and radiation oncologists will discuss the right treatment plan for you, which may include:

    • Brachytherapy
    • High-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy
    • Hormone therapy
    • Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT)

    Same day testing and results

    In most centers, you wait days for test results. We understand this can be very stressful, so at the Genesis Cancer Care Center, we make sure you have your results the same day. We also coordinate blood draws, chemotherapy sessions and doctors’ visits in the same day to help you avoid extra trips. We’ll even schedule an appointment the same day your family doctor refers you.

    Robotic cancer surgery

    Depending on your condition, your surgeon may use robotic surgical technology or another minimally invasive approach that speeds your recovery. Your surgeon has a magnified, 3D view of the surgical field. Patients benefit from a reduced hospital stay after surgery, less postoperative pain, shorter recovery time and smaller incisions.     Certified surgeons and cancer nurse navigators

Our qualified staff is comprised of cancer surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, pathologists, oncology certified nurses and plastic surgeons who work together to provide personalized plans of care. Cancer nurse navigators are oncology-certified nurses who specialize in caring for your particular cancer. They follow you from the initial biopsy, diagnosis, surgery, treatment, follow-up and through survivorship. These nurses are a constant for you and your family.     Same day test results, in-house pharmacy

    Genesis Cancer Services offers same day radiology and laboratory results for our patients to decrease travel and multiple appointments in one day. Genesis Cancer Care Center also offers an in-house pharmacy with specially trained oncology pharmacists who answer questions and provide patient chemotherapy education about potential side effects. Our goal is to provide WrapAround Care by ensuring comprehensive same-day appointments.

    Calming oasis for chemotherapy

    The Cancer Care Center offers a chemotherapy and infusion suite that is modeled after a first-class airline cabin. Each bay has a leather, heated infusion chair with massage. You have a floor-to-ceiling window view overlooking a walking trail with lots of natural light. We offer meals during your treatment, and we have refreshments as well. We have iPads available for use and reading materials to help you pass the time. Your support person can sit with you during your treatment.

    Genetic testing and clinical trials

    You can count on us to provide access to a wide range of tests and treatments. This includes access to clinical trials and genetic testing. Genesis offers clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and pharmaceutical companies. We also have the latest in genetics testing for prevention, diagnosis and risk assessment.

    Genesis offers specialty centers, testing and treatment to meet your individual needs. Our goal is to provide quality care, at the right time, in the right place. And we do so with compassion for the journey you are taking.

    Centers and services

    Genesis has two centers, two additional services and a boutique for post-cancer treatment needs all dedicated to your needs throughout your care. These are the Breast Care Center, Cancer Care Center, Inpatient Care, Palliative Care and the Women’s Boutique.

    Breast Care Center

    The Genesis Breast Care Center offers diagnostic testing including mammograms, ultrasound and ultrasound-guided biopsies. We have a board-certified breast surgeon, nurse practitioner and trained, compassionate staff to provide you expert care. We see patients with cancer and benign breast conditions at this location in the Genesis HealthPlex.

    Cancer Care Center

    The Genesis Cancer Care Center is attached to Genesis Hospital and offers everything you need in one location. The care you receive at the Cancer Care Center includes medical oncology, radiation oncology, chemotherapy infusion, on-site laboratory, on-site pharmacy, the Genesis Women’s Boutique, patient financial counselors, spiritual care and pet therapy. For your convenience, the hospital cafeteria, gift shop and Lobby Bistro are just a short walk via a glass-enclosed hallway.

    Inpatient Care

    The Genesis Inpatient Care team has oncology-trained chemotherapy-certified nursing staff to care for you in the inpatient setting should you need that level of care. The inpatient team is here to assist if you should need to be admitted for symptom management, chemotherapy infusions and post-surgery care.

    Palliative Care

    Genesis has an on-site Palliative Care clinic within the Cancer Care Center. We have board-certified physicians in Palliative Care who are experts in managing symptoms for those with serious and chronic illness. Our team offers comfort for patients and their families at any age or stage of an illness.

    Women’s Boutique

    At the Genesis Women’s Boutique located in the lobby of the Cancer Care Center, you’ll discover products that can help you feel more confident and comfortable during cancer care. Trust our caring staff to understand your concerns and answer your questions. We offer certified mastectomy fitters who can help you find the best fit for you after your surgery, breast forms and shapers, bras, wigs, scarves, hats, lotions and gifts. We want to help you look and feel your best after surgery and during chemotherapy.

    Testing and treatments

    Genesis offers additional services to assist you through your diagnostic work-up and treatment.

    Genetic testing and clinical trials

    The latest in genetic testing is available for screening, diagnostics and risk determination. Trained staff are available to provide genetic testing results. We also offer clinical trials for prevention, treatment, symptom management and registry that can help in improving outcomes for cancer patients.

    Cancer rehabilitation

    Cancer rehabilitation is available through physical therapy, occupational therapy, counseling and spiritual support. Our caring staff will assist you in determining which rehabilitation services may benefit you the most and help you make arrangements for these services.

    Education, nutrition and support

    Cancer nursing and pharmacy staff provide patient education regarding screening, diagnostics, treatment and survivorship. Nutrition support is offered through dietician consultation and education. We have spiritual support on-site and pet therapy.

    Concussion Management

    Concussion Management and Therapy

    Genesis Rehabilitation Services are experienced and specialty-trained in treating both children and adults with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) or concussions.

     Our licensed physical therapists will work with you and your physician to determine the severity of your concussion. After your evaluation, our specialists will develop a return to play or return to work treatment plan and use concussion testing technologies to set cognitive baselines and post-concussion benchmarks during your recovery.

     

    What Is a concussion?

    A concussion is a type of brain injury that involves a short loss of brain function and can be a scary injury.  A concussion sometimes follows a blow to the head or a fall. 

    The injury can cause symptoms such as:

    • Blurred vision
    • Dizziness
    • Irritability, sadness or anxiety
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Persistent headache
    • Trouble thinking clearly and concentrating

    You can receive expert concussion therapy in Zanesville and Somerset for concussions and post-concussion syndrome without traveling far from home. 

    Our therapists offer comprehensive concussion treatments after an assessment that may include:

    Responding to concussion symptoms

    If you suspect a concussion in your child or yourself, stop athletic activity right away and seek medical attention to prevent further injury.

    Genesis Rehabilitation Services staff measures the severity of potential concussions by using a standardized test. Depending on the results, a physical therapist will develop a personalized rehabilitation plan and monitor your or your child’s progress throughout recovery.

    Return to play program after a concussion

    Our return to play program is supervised and administered by licensed physical therapists specialty-trained in concussions.

    If your child or loved one receives or is suspecting of receiving a concussion, has a suspected concussion, they can be evaluated by one of our specialty-trained therapists. After the evaluation, a physical therapist will develop a personalized rehabilitation plan and monitor the patient's progress throughout recovery.

    The program has five phases, with at least 24 hours between each phase. If concussion symptoms reoccur, the athlete or individual stops activity and rests, then the therapy resumes when the athlete is symptom-free.

    Our therapists work closely with your physician to ensure it’s safe to return to sports, school or work.

    Each year, the team provides free sports physicals to student athletes, providing this state requirement to participate in sports to all who need it.

    The Genesis Orthopedic Sports Medicine team also works with area schools to provide sports medicine and athletic trainer services.

    Sports medicine training programs

      Sportsmetrics™ Training to Prevent Knee Injuries

      If you’re a female athlete in middle school or above, Sportsmetrics™ can help you reduce the risk of a knee injury such as an ACL tear—which is up to 10 times as common in women as in men. During a six-week training program, you’ll learn how to:

      • Develop overall leg strength
      • Perfect your jumping and landing techniques
      • Improve flexibility
      • Safely engage in high-intensity strength training
      • Properly perform sprinting and cutting movements
