It’s hard to find something bad to say about apples. They’re considered one of America’s strongest crops and favorite foods. They’re included in advertising jingles listing the things that define America. However, there are some things to be aware of before you bite into that shiny Red Delicious.

Know before you go to the produce section

  • Apples are often sprayed with pesticides and waxed to make them look shiny and fresh. These chemicals can be harmful to physical and environmental health. The Environmental Working Group, an environmental and food safety research and advocacy organization, tested more than 125 pounds of apples from Washington state and found that more than 84% of the apples tested positive for pesticides. These findings were not at all unusual. Always wash apples thoroughly before eating them or buy organic apples if possible.

  • Apples are naturally sweet and do not need extra sugar or artificial sweeteners. Adding sugar or processed products like caramel, chocolate or pastry increases the calories, fat and sugar content of apples and negates their health benefits. You should eat apples raw, baked or cooked with natural ingredients like cinnamon, nuts or honey.
