    The Observation Unit is fast-paced and provides care for:

    • Chest pain
    • Cardiac testing
    • Medical-Surgical overflow
    • Post-procedural recovery

    Department make-up:

    • 23 beds
    • Closed staffing – no floating to other departments
    • Registered Nurses and Multi-Skilled Technicians
    • Admission Discharge Transfer position: R.N. coordinates patient admissions, discharges and transfers to improve patient flow in and out of Observation

    Scheduling:

    • Shifts are 12 hours: day shift is 7 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. and night shift is 7 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.
    • Only work every third weekend
    • Holiday rotation is assigned per weekend (work two holidays per year: one summer and one winter. Holidays rotate yearly.
    • Modified self-scheduling is available
    • Availability for overtime and bonus

    Highlights of Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit (CPCU)

    • Intermediate care with a Cardiac and Vascular focus

      - Open heart patients post 24 hours surgery

    • Care and recovery of patients of newer procedures in our area. Patients no longer need to go to larger facilities to have the procedures done.

    • Put your nursing skills to use providing care to patients that require frequent interventions and monitoring. CPCU nurses are specialty trained nurses that are clinically competent in the areas of femoral arterial sheath removal, titrating a wide variety of medications including inotropic medications, assisting with moderate sedation bedside procedures, monitoring closure devices like Femostop, SafeGuard and more.
    • Ratio: 2-4:1 patient to R.N. ratio with 3 MSTs on the floor and 1 MST as Staff Assistant for monitoring telemetry.
    • Out of the count charge nurse:

      - The charge nurse will not take patient assignments and on each shift will maintain an ongoing evaluation of patient acuity and care needs and adjusts nursing assignment accordingly.

    • Caring and recovering for the most complex critically ill patients in the hospital, including invasive and non-invasive hemodynamic/cardiac monitoring.

    • Ratio: 1:1, 2:1 or 3:1 based on patient acuity. One MST as staff assistant/telemetry monitoring. 1-3 MST’s on floor based off unit census. 24/7 coverage by a Pulmonary/Critical Care trained Intensivists.
    • Out of count charge nurse: maintains an ongoing evaluation of patient acuity and care needs, and adjusts nursing assignments accordingly.

    The Surgical Services department consists of:

    • Endoscopy – Colonoscopies and bronchoscopies
    • Operating Room

      - General and Heart, Lung, and Vascular Surgery 

    • Genesis Surgery Center – Outpatient surgeries going home the same day
    • Genesis Coshocton Medical Center (GCMC) Surgery Center – Outpatient surgeries going home the same day
    • Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) – Waking up and recovering patients after surgery
    • Outpatient (Pre/Post) – Getting patients ready for surgery and providing care and education to discharge home
    • Preadmission Testing – Surgical optimization, preop instructions and medication evaluations

    Schedule is based on where you work

    • Each area has its own scheduling. We have 8, 9, 10 and 12-hour shifts depending on the area that you work
    • Modified self-scheduling – Staff can make their own schedule, changes may need to be made based on staffing
    • Endoscopy, Main OR and PACU have on-call time with holidays and weekends

      - On-call means that you are required to respond to the hospital for any emergency cases that arise. Surgery and PACU require a 30-minute response time, while Endoscopy requires a 45-minute response time

    • Endoscopy offers a unique opportunity to learn all aspects of procedural care from pre-procedure, intra-procedure and post-procedure. We are a fast-paced environment performing procedures varying from diagnostic colonoscopies to advanced robotic bronchoscopies (one of two facilities in Ohio with this capability)
    • Opportunity to cross-train to another area within surgical services such as Admitting/Recovery to the OR for GSC and GCMC or PACU to Outpatient Surgery and vice versa at the main campus
