Improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients

The Genesis Cancer Care Center is accredited by the Commission on Cancer (COC), a program of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS). The commission recognizes cancer care programs for their commitment to providing comprehensive, high-quality and multidisciplinary patient-centered care. The COC is dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and monitoring of comprehensive quality care.

Achieving excellence in cancer treatment

COC-accredited centers like the Genesis Cancer Care Center demonstrate a commitment to patients and the community by providing education on preventing or finding cancer early; offering treatment and therapies; and supporting patients through survival. As part of maintaining COC accreditation, a multidisciplinary team at Genesis, the COC Committee, meets regularly to coordinate care and ensure quality measures continue to be met.

Adhering to COC requirements

The Commission on Cancer requires a specific program structure, comprehensive program services and COC Committee responsibilities to earn and maintain accreditation by the COC. Each site is required to submit information to the COC for review and pass a site survey. Surveys occur every three years.

Choose Genesis for quality cancer treatment

Genesis demonstrates a commitment to quality care by participating in the COC. You can be assured you or your loved one is receiving the highest quality cancer care, including:

Comprehensive care with state-of-the-art services and equipment
Multi-specialty team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options

American Board for Certification (ABC) of Orthotics and Prosthetics

Certified mastectomy fitters are professionally credentialed

The American Board for Certification of Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC) is the national certifying and accrediting body for orthotic, prosthetic and pedorthic professions. The ABC has become the quality standard for certification. It provides credentialing for mastectomy fitters and facility accreditation for the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS), Veterans’ Administrations and other health care insurance providers. The Genesis Women’s Boutique mastectomy fitters are certified by the ABC.

Awarded to orthotic centers that achieve excellence in prosthetics

Maintaining accreditation through the ABC demonstrates our commitment to providing certified professionals for your personalized fitting after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. The Genesis Cancer Care Center and Women’s Boutique meet the standards to ensure you reach your goals for fittings. Insurance companies see this as a sign of quality as they determine payment for the services at the Women’s Boutique based on your insurance plan

Certified mastectomy fitters meet requirements

The certified mastectomy fitters at Genesis meet education and experience requirements to be eligible to take the certification exam. After they receive their certification, fitters must maintain continuing education for maintenance of this credential.

Our certified fitters help you look and feel your best

After a mastectomy or lumpectomy, you want to look and feel your best. We’re committed to providing a personalized fitting for a prosthetic breast, shaper and bra. We make sure to take the time with you to meet your needs. We have supplies like prostheses, bras and shapers for purchase on-site, and we can order items to be shipped to your home. We’ll assist with contacting your insurance for coverage. Insurance covers replacement prosthetics and bras at certain intervals. If you don’t have insurance, our compassionate staff can help you determine if you qualify for financial assistance.

Clinical Trials

cameron.snyderpitts
Submitted by cameron.snyderpitts on

Genesis is committed to providing you with the latest in genetic testing and access to clinical trials close to home. With the Genesis Cancer Risk Program, you can learn the role genes play in cancer, and after your assessment, our staff can help you find ways to reduce your risk through prescribed screening intervals, surgery or other treatment if needed.

Genesis offers both National Cancer Institute-sponsored and pharmaceutical company trials. Participating in clinical trials offers the chance to participate in the latest treatment, supportive care and provide information that may help others with the same cancer. During your appointment, your care team will discuss clinical trials options if you may qualify.

Cancer clinical trials

Through Genesis Cancer Services, you may qualify for a clinical trial that tests a promising new cancer therapy, screening test, medication or intervention for symptom control, or cancer registry for those with the same disease to improve outcomes. Taking part in a clinical trial is voluntary. If you’re eligible for a clinical trial, you gain access to treatments not yet available to the public, and you contribute to essential medical research. But, as with other types of medical treatment, your cancer therapy may cause side effects. The Cancer Care Center staff will monitor your symptoms closely and make adjustments as necessary for comfort and safety.

Talk to your doctor or nurse navigator if you have questions about clinical trials. Cancer Services’ research staff will act as your advocate and help ensure your safety during a clinical trial.

Learn more about clinical trials

ClinicalTrials.gov is a database of privately and publicly funded clinical studies conducted around the world.

National Cancer Institute-sponsored cooperative group

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsors clinical trials nationally. Genesis participates in clinical trials run through the NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) based in Columbus along with other community cancer centers in Southeastern Ohio. The trials through NCORP are the same ones available at major academic and Columbus hospitals but are more convenient for those who live in our community. Ask your doctor if you are eligible for a clinical trial that you may participate in before, during and after cancer treatment.

Pharmaceutical companies sponsor clinical trials

Genesis participates in clinical trials sponsored by pharmaceutical companies and the National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program. These trials offer access to drugs and treatments not always available at other centers. Genesis is committed to offering the latest in treatment close to home. Ask your doctor if you are eligible for a clinical trial that you may participate in before, during and after cancer treatment.

Genetic testing and counseling

Learn if you could be at risk for hereditary cancer by turning to the Genesis Cancer Risk Program. You’ll learn information that will help you take charge of your health.

The Genesis Cancer Risk Program is for those who:

  • Are from a family with an inherited kind of cancer
  • Diagnosed with a rare cancer, such as male breast cancer
  • Have a family member who developed cancer before age 50
  • Have a family member who was diagnosed with more than one type of cancer
  • Have had two or more relatives on the same side of the family with the same or related cancers such as breast and ovarian cancers
  • Worry about your risk based on your family history

Cancer risk screening for prevention

The Genesis Cancer Risk Program begins with you meeting with one of our cancer nurse navigators. You’ll discuss your health information and your family’s medical history and learn the role genes play in cancer. Your nurse will then consult with genetic counselors and a medical oncologist to assess your risk.

Together, our team reviews preventive strategies that can reduce your likelihood of cancer. You’ll also learn about screenings that improve your odds of catching the disease early, when treatment works best.

Ask your doctor about our genetic testing options before, during and after cancer treatment.

Cancer treatment based on genetics

Cancer treatment is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Genetics play an important role in the decision on how to treat your cancer regarding surgery, chemotherapy, biotherapy, immunotherapy and maintenance if needed.

Cancer Rehabilitation

When you have cancer, you may need help getting back to your normal activities. Our cancer team works with you to determine your goals for post-cancer treatment. Our experienced therapists help you achieve your goals and return to a healthy lifestyle. There are several types of rehabilitation therapy we provide at Genesis.

Regain your strength and independence

After cancer treatment, Genesis wants you to get back to feeling your best. That’s why we offer a comprehensive cancer rehabilitation program complete with a wide spectrum of therapies. The Genesis Cancer Rehabilitation program can help you:

  • Gain energy, strength and endurance
  • Feel more comfortable
  • Increase your independence
  • Reduce swelling (lymphedema)
  • Sleep better

Breast cancer rehabilitation

After you’ve been treated for breast cancer, you may not have the same flexibility, range of motion or energy levels as before. Rehabilitation after breast cancer is designed to help you regain strength, mobility and reduce swelling after radiation, chemotherapy or surgery. As part of the Genesis breast cancer rehabilitation program, you’ll meet with a physical therapist who designs personalized treatment recommendations. Your plan may include manual therapy, exercise and education to prevent lymphedema, improve and maintain your shoulder’s range of motion and strength, and enhance your fitness level.

Ask your doctor for a referral to this program that you may participate in before, during and after cancer treatment.

Other therapies available

Genesis offers additional therapy services to assist in your healing and recovery after cancer treatment. Ask your Genesis patient navigator or doctor if you would benefit from rehabilitation services, which include:

  • Lymphedema therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Speech-language therapy

Lymphedema therapy

If a surgeon removes your lymph nodes during cancer treatment, you may experience lymphedema – swelling in your arms, legs, neck or abdomen. A Genesis therapist trained in lymphedema treatment can teach you how to relieve symptoms through massage, bandaging, exercising and other techniques.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy helps you relearn or learn how to better complete everyday tasks after an illness, surgery, side effect or injury. Depending on your needs, occupational therapies may include:

  • Home skills such as housekeeping, gardening and cooking
  • Personal care activities such as dressing and eating
  • Personal management like balancing a checkbook, keeping a schedule
  • Skills important in driving a car or motor vehicle
  • Special vehicle determinations (if hand brakes are needed for vehicle)
  • Vision, thinking and judgment skills needed for driving

Physical therapy

Physical therapy helps in the recovery from illness, surgery, side effects or injury through prescribed exercise. You will meet with a physical therapist who will examine you and talk to you about your symptoms and your daily activity. He or she will then work with you on a treatment plan. First, your therapist will try to reduce your pain and swelling. Your physical therapist also may use manual therapy, education, and techniques such as heat, cold, water, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation.

Physical therapy almost always includes exercise. It can include stretching, core exercises, weight lifting, and walking. Your physical therapist may teach you an exercise program, so you can do it at home.

Speech-language therapy

Speech therapy helps in the recovery from illness, surgery, side effect or injury. This therapy improves your ability to communicate, eat and swallow including:

  • Recognizing swallowing problems
  • Reducing long pauses or slurring
  • Reducing nasal sounds when face muscles get too relaxed
  • Improving speech patterns or rhythms and pronouncing words
  • Learning other ways to speak, such as alphabet cards, cell phone or tapes
  • Learning which foods are better to eat if it's hard to swallow

Choosing Genesis: A doctor's choice for treatment | Brandice Alexander, D.O.

When prompted by her family physician, Dr. Alexander followed recommended colon cancer screening guidelines. Two days after her colonoscopy, she received a call with the biopsy results that one of the two polyps found was cancerous. Now she uses her experience as a patient to reassure her patients.

“I tell them, ‘I know you’re scared, but you need to know that there are six people in this surgery suite, and you are our only focus.’ I’ve been on the receiving end of that focus. The right people are in those positions.”

It’s Personal: Your Body, Your Cancer Care | Sherry Sims

Sherry’s mammogram revealed a suspicious shadow on her right breast, so she received a biopsy at the Genesis Cancer Care Center. The result was a diagnosis of ER-positive, HER2 negative breast cancer. Sherry said she’ll never forget the people at the Genesis Cancer Care Center.

“These people are like my family now,” Sherry said. “They treated me how I wanted to be treated.”

Mother of Two Survives Stage II Breast Cancer | Ashley Tamasovich

Ashley Tamasovich had a nagging, gut feeling that she needed to schedule a routine well-check with her primary care physician, but she had brushed it off.

“I did my research on doctors as well, and Genesis has very knowledgeable physicians. I’m glad I chose to have my treatment at Genesis."

Patient Chooses Same Surgeon for Left Knee as Right Knee

Rheumatoid Arthritis Knee Pain is Gone After Knee Replacement

It was a great holiday season for Laquita Triplett who played with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and left her walker far behind. “I’ve already been shopping a couple of times with my daughters in St. Clairsville, and I’m looking forward to getting outside more this summer,” she said.

Just a few months ago, Laquita could barely walk. She had bone-on-bone pain and needed a total knee replacement. “I was in such bad shape before I got my knee done, I got out of the habit of doing things I enjoy,” said the normally active 80-year-old woman.

Previously, Laquita was a patient of Corey Jackson, D.O., a Genesis orthopedic surgeon. At the time, Dr. Jackson practiced in Cambridge, Ohio, not too far from Batesville, Laquita’s home. “I treated Laquita years ago with a right knee replacement, then I moved out of the area,” Dr. Jackson said.

When bone-on-bone pain requires a knee replacement

Laquita began having problems in her other knee, along with rheumatoid arthritis. She wished Dr. Jackson was there to do her left knee, and then her wish came true. “I found out he was moving back to Zanesville, and I waited to get the surgery,” she said. “I think Dr. Jackson’s pretty special; he provides the best care.”

Shortly after Dr. Jackson joined Genesis and returned home, he was reunited with Laquita. She could barely get in and out of a chair, had to climb stairs one at a time and depended on a walker for balance.

Dr. Jackson did Laquita’s total knee replacement in October using Genesis’ revolutionary KneeAlign technology. The state-of-the-art joint alignment tools provides orthopedic surgeons with real-time data and reproducible result. “Laquita’s going up and down stairs now in a normal way,” Dr. Jackson said. “There is nothing more satisfying than to see patients walk out of my office after undergoing surgery when they required a walker at the initial meeting,” he said.

Making a full recovery after surgery

“It just turned out great,” Laquita said. “Dr. Jackson is an extraordinary surgeon.” She also had excellent care following surgery. “I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful group of people. You have no idea how great it is being able to walk again,” she said. “Before, I couldn’t go from point A to point B without my walker.”

Laquita would encourage anyone experiencing knee pain, rheumatoid arthritis or any similar condition to contact the orthopedic specialists at Genesis.

Dr. Jackson agrees. “We can easily find out how much treatment would help,” he said. “Often we can even restore some mobility function without surgery.” Patients are no longer hospital-bound for days following orthopedic surgery. For Laquita it was an overnight stay.

Laquita progressed quickly following surgery, even climbing the long stairs to her house easily when she arrived home. “If people could see these stairs, they wouldn’t have believed I could’ve done it,” Laquita said. Time only increased her mobility. “By Thanksgiving, I had big improvements,” she said. “I was pain-free.”

Laquita welcomed a house full of 26 guests during the holidays. “To be able to walk around with no pain is just incredible,” Laquita said. “It made my holidays much more joyful.”

Knee replacements last longer with alignment technology

Dr. Jackson uses this innovative smart device about the size of a large cell phone, called KneeAlign, to improve accuracy in total and partial knee replacement surgeries. Using smart technology, similar to GPS navigation, the device precisely maps out each patient’s alignment and anatomy. With the cutting-edge device, Dr. Jackson provides patients with customizable placement of their knee replacement components.

In comparison, traditional knee replacement surgeries use statistics and averages to determine where and at what angle to place the prosthetic knee components. With this technology, each patient’s “new knee” sits perfectly horizontal to the rotation of the knee, based on each patient’s unique anatomy.

Dr. Jackson is the only surgeon offering the KneeAlign technology in our region, which offers many benefits, including:

  • Increased accuracy
    Decreased surgery time
    Less blood loss
    Less pain
    Longer lasting knee replacements

If you are living with chronic knee pain, have been told that you need knee surgery or want to learn about this surgical technology, call (740) 586-6828.

Orthopedic Surgeon Uses GPS to Improve Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacements last longer with precise alignment technology

At first, her knee didn’t bend correctly. Then pain began piercing her. Overtime, that pain grew more and more debilitating. After four years of hobbling through the hurt, Glenna Simon, 57-year-old Zanesville resident, could no longer carry her groceries from her car to her home. She couldn’t make it down the stairs to do her laundry. Her quality of life dramatically decreased, while her constant pain continued to increase. It was time for a change. It was time for a new knee.

When cortisone shots and gel injections stop working

“I couldn’t put any weight on that knee and it refrained me from doing a lot of activities – it was a damper on my lifestyle,” Glenna said.

Prior to her total knee replacement surgery, Glenna sought relief from cortisone shots and a series of gel injections, to no avail. When she made the decision to have surgery, a physician referred her to Corey Jackson, D.O., orthopedic surgeon with the Genesis Orthopedic Group.

Choosing the right orthopedic surgeon for knee replacement

“Dr. Jackson was kind and understanding, and he took the time to explain everything to me,” Glenna said. “He told me, ‘We’re going to get through this.’ I loved how he was down-to-earth and easy to speak with. I decided this was the doctor for me – and I’m so glad I did.”

Being close to home, the office visits were convenient for Glenna. Dr. Jackson obtained standing X-rays of Glenna’s knee and diagnosed her with severe end-stage osteoarthritis, caused by wear and tear over time.

“When a knee gets to that point, there’s not much that can be done except a total knee arthroplasty procedure – a knee replacement,” Dr. Jackson said. “The good news is, we use cutting-edge technology to give our patients the most accurate placement of their knee prosthetics, and the prosthetics themselves have evolved tremendously during the past decade.”

Using smart technology for precise knee joint placement

Dr. Jackson is the only surgeon offering the KneeAlign® technology in our region. KneeAlign applies smart technology, like GPS navigation, to precisely map out each patient’s alignment and anatomy. With the device, Dr. Jackson provides patients with customizable positioning of their knee replacement components.

“We know knee replacements last longer if they’re aligned correctly with a patient’s anatomy,” Dr. Jackson explained. “KneeAlign provides precision every time. With the technology, I know for sure that the knees have perfect alignment – giving my patients the best knee replacement available.”

Praised amongst orthopedic surgeons nationwide, KneeAlign offers many benefits, including:

  • Increased accuracy
    Decreased surgery time
    Less blood loss
    Less pain
    Longer lasting knee replacements

Rehabilitation therapy is important after knee surgery

Glenna’s total knee replacement surgery took place in mid-November. She spent two days at Genesis Hospital before returning home for further healing. Within two weeks of the procedure, she bid her walker goodbye and graduated to a cane. She also underwent rehabilitation therapy at home before beginning a three-times-a-week outpatient rehab regiment at Genesis Center for Occupational and Outpatient Rehabilitation.

“The rehabilitation therapy is intense, but you have to be consistent with it for it to work for you,” Glenna said. “It’s definitely worth it to be out of pain and to get my life back.”

On average, it takes about six months for a full recovery, so Glenna’s not tackling stairs yet, but she says she sees the light at the end of the tunnel, and she’s walking toward it – without pain.

“Our goals with total knee replacement surgery are to help our patients become pain-free and have increased function. We want them to get their lives back,” Dr. Jackson said.

Dealing with joint pain? Glenna offers her advice

“I know it’s a hard decision to make when you know what you have to go through. It was hard for me to make that decision, too,” said Glenna. “But if you really want relief and want to do things you’re unable to do now, I suggest having the surgery and getting it done as soon as possible. Why put yourself through the pain of just dealing with a bad knee when you can get back to enjoying life again?”
