      Genesis Receives National Stroke Award

      Genesis Receives National Stroke Award

Nationally recognized research guidelines based on scientific evidence

Genesis HealthCare System has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s (AHA/ASA) Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: Stroke® Honor Roll.

      National Stroke Award

The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to providing the most appropriate stroke treatment according to nationally recognized research guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

This is the third consecutive year for the Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and the second consecutive year Genesis has received the award together with the Target: Stroke Honor Roll®.

Hospitals must achieve 85% or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month periods and achieve 75% or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality measures, to receive the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.

Genesis has also met specific scientific guidelines as a Primary Stroke Center, featuring a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the Emergency Department.

To qualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. If given intravenously in the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms, tPA has been shown to significantly reduce the effects of stroke and lessen the chance of permanent disability. Genesis earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period.

Get With The Guidelines-Stroke puts the expertise of the AHA/ASA to work for hospitals nationwide, helping hospital care teams ensure the care provided to patients is aligned with the latest research-based guidelines. Developed with the goal to save lives and improve recovery time, Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke has impacted more than 3 million patients since 2003.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and nearly 800,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

        Genesis Receives Echocardiography Accreditation

Patients can rely on Genesis for quality patient care

Genesis has been granted another three-year term of Echocardiography accreditation in Adult Transthoracic, Adult Transesophageal and Adult Stress by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC).

        Echocardiography Accredited Facility

Genesis carefully critiqued on all aspects of operations

IAC accreditation is a “seal of approval” that patients can rely on as an indication that Genesis has been carefully critiqued on all aspects of its operations considered relevant by medical experts in the field of Echocardiography.

IAC accreditation is widely respected within the medical community, as illustrated by the support of the national medical societies related to Echocardiography, which include physicians and sonographers.

Echocardiography Accreditation by the IAC means that Genesis HealthCare System has undergone a thorough review of its operational and technical components by a panel of experts. The IAC grants accreditation only to those facilities that are found to be providing quality patient care, in compliance with national standards through a comprehensive application process including detailed case study review.

By maintaining accreditation in these areas, Genesis improves the quality of diagnostic testing and patient care by:

          • Requiring that all technical and medical staff are appropriately trained and demonstrate the experience necessary to perform and interpret cardiovascular diagnostic ultrasounds.
          • Mandating that examination areas are adequately designed to facilitate exams.
          • Demanding proof that all instrumentation is maintained and in good order.
          • Dictating thorough protocols and reports that provide quantitative data necessary to demonstrate accurate diagnosis.
          • Implementing mandatory QA processes that demonstrate compliance with appropriate use criteria, report timeliness and completeness, correlation with gold standard diagnostic procedures and both technical and medical peer review.

Genesis has succeeded in gaining and maintaining Accreditation in:

          • Chest Pain
          • Adult Transthoracic Echocardiography
          • Adult Transesophageal Echocardiography
          • Adult Stress Echo
          • Extracranial Cerebrovascular Testing
          • Peripheral Arterial Testing
          • Peripheral Venous Testing

Cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death in the United States. On average, one American dies every 39 seconds of cardiovascular disease – disorders of the heart and blood vessels. The American Heart Association estimates that the direct and indirect cost for cardiovascular disease in the U.S for 2010 was $503.2 billion.

Patients experiencing palpitations, fluttering or racing heartbeats may benefit from Genesis Electrophysiology services. Arrhythmias can sometimes occur in a healthy heart and be of minimal consequence, but they can sometimes indicate a serious problem that can lead to heart disease, stroke or sudden death. Cardiac electrophysiology is the diagnosis and treatment of those abnormal heart rate and rhythms.

Shaun Bhatty, M.D., Discusses Atrial Fibrillation

The most common type of arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation (A-Fib) and is the result of the top portion or atria of the heart beating out of rhythm. An electrophysiology (EP) study is used to diagnosis the type and severity of arrhythmias.

              • Arrhythmias

              • Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib)
