(Quiz) Phobias: Don’t Be Scared to Read This

Submitted by Kyle.Norton on

Have you ever been so afraid it changes your life in a bad way? Perhaps you stopped swimming in the ocean after you saw Jaws? Maybe you keep a brick in your bedroom to smash spiders. Or you walk up 15 flights of stairs because there is no way you are getting into the deathtrap that some people call an elevator.

Experiencing fear occasionally is one thing, but living with a phobia can ruin your life. Take our quiz to learn more about the difference and how you can take control of your fears.

By the way, if you have a spider smashing brick, we are not judging. Some spiders are frightening, and we don’t want them on the bottom of our shoe either.

Keep in mind everyone has fears and some have phobias. Just because stuffed animals don’t scare you, doesn’t mean they may cause your roommate to hide in the closet at night, praying for someone to save them. Regardless, help is available and the best first step is to talk to your doctor for advice. Until then, we won’t tell if you leave the light on all night.

Self-Tanner: How to avoid the orange glow

Submitted by Kyle.Norton on

We all know the dangers of laying out in direct sunlight or jumping into the nearest tanning bed. So how do you achieve that perfect tanned glow without harmful ultraviolet rays? It sounds almost too good to be true, but sunless tanning can safely turn you freshly bronzed with just a dab of lotion or a spritz of spray.

Before you reach for that miracle in a bottle, though, read on for the how-to’s of sunless tanning products.

How it works

Self-tanning products typically come in two forms: lotions and sprays. Most sunless tanning lotions are sold over-the-counter, while sprays can usually be found in professional salons and spas.

The active ingredient in most of these lotions is dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, which temporarily darkens the color of the dead skin cells in the outermost layer. Like most tanning options, sunless tanning typically lasts just a few days before the skin returns to its normal color.

Getting even results

Before using any sunless tanning product, you’ll need to apply an exfoliator to your skin to remove any loose dead skin cells. This will allow the product to work the most effectively.

When you’re ready to apply the tanning lotion, it’s best to put it on in sections, beginning on your torso and arms before moving to the next section. Use the least amount necessary; excessive use can result in that dreaded orange glow. Also, be sure to work the product onto your skin in a circular motion to ensure the lotion is applied evenly so you avoid streaks. And if you opt not to use gloves when applying the product, be sure to wash your hands immediately after to prevent any staining.

Safety factors

While the Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of DHA in sunless tanning products (as long as they are applied externally), it is not approved for use on certain parts of the face, including the eyes, nose and mouth. The FDA also recommends against the use of sunless tanning pills because they can potentially damage your eyesight, along with your liver and other vital organs.

And remember that the active ingredients in sunless tanning lotions and sprays will not protect you against UV rays, so always use sunscreen on your self-tanned skin.

Genesis Receives Stroke Center Recertification

Submitted by Jeff.Mills on

Demonstrates high-quality stroke care

Zanesville, Ohio (April 19, 2021) – Genesis HealthCare System earned primary stroke recertification by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP), the nation’s original independent accreditation organization recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Primary stroke certification means that hospitals can stabilize and treat acute stroke patients, provide acute care, and administer tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), an FDA-approved treatment for ischemic strokes, as well as other therapies safely and efficiently.

“Achieving this recertification is the result of our team’s commitment to providing fast, high-quality stroke care to patients. Our experienced physicians, nurses and staff work tirelessly to provide life-saving care to patients when they arrive at the Emergency Department, in addition to follow-up care,” said Keela Barker, Director of Rehabilitation & Ambulatory Services at Genesis. “We also dedicate numerous resources to educating people about recognizing the signs of stroke.”

HFAP stroke certification is a three-year award with a mid-cycle review at 18 months. HFAP has been certifying stroke centers since 2006 and currently offers the most options for facilities seeking stroke care certification. HFAP is the nation’s only accreditation program that certifies the full stroke continuum – stroke ready, primary stroke and comprehensive stroke.

Tattoos and body piercing: Is it safe? FAQs

Submitted by Jeff.Mills on

Body art is a growing trend among all age groups. While ear piercing has been a staple accessory for decades, piercings on other parts of the body are also growing in popularity. Both have become more socially acceptable. You might be thinking about jumping on board and getting a tattoo or piercing. Here are some questions and answers you should consider to ensure you make the right – and safe – decision.

Q: How will I know if a body art studio is clean?
A: The entire shop, including the bathroom, should be clean. If you have any concerns, look for a different studio.

Q: Is there a procedure manual of written standards?
A: Reputable studios will have a procedure manual of written standards for sterilization among other safety protocols. Ask to see it.

Q: What type of sterilization procedures does the shop follow?
A: An autoclave is the best way to sterilize reusable equipment. An autoclave is a machine that sterilizes using heat. Reusable equipment should be sterilized and stored in sterile bags. The date of sterilization should be clearly visible on the bags.

Q: How are instruments that cannot be sterilized handled?
A: Make sure that instruments or supplies that can’t be sterilized using an autoclave are disinfected after every use with a commercial disinfectant or bleach solution.

Q: Are sterile needles used for piercing?
A: Needles should be stored in sterilized packages, only used once, and disposed of in safety containers.

Q: Does the person doing the tattoo or piercing wear gloves?
A: A fresh pair of gloves should be used for each procedure. Make sure the operator washes his or her hands before putting on the gloves. Ask the operator to change his or her gloves if he or she answers the telephone or does anything else during your procedure.

Q: Is a piercing gun used to do the procedure?
A: Do not have any kind of piercing done with a piercing gun. These instruments increase your risk of infection because they cannot be sterilized between procedures.

Q: What kind of jewelry is used for the piercing?
A: Only use nonallergenic jewelry.
•    Surgical stainless steel, gold, platinum, niobium and titanium are the only types of jewelry you should use in a new piercing.
•    Do not use nickel or brass-plated jewelry.
•    Choose jewelry that has not been used or worn or that has been sterilized in an autoclave.

Although the piercing industry is not as well-regulated as the health care industry, some states have hygienic regulations to ensure safe tattooing practices. Check with your city or county health department to find out whether there have been any complaints about the studio you are thinking of using.
